Our History

Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics just celebrated 60 years of making the Guttenberg area a great place to live, work and play. In 1961, Guttenberg Municipal Hospital was established as a nonprofit municipal hospital under the charter of the City of Guttenberg, Iowa. Today GMHC, an Affiliate of MercyOne, remains an independent community hospital providing acute and skilled healthcare services, and includes family practice clinics in Guttenberg, Garnavillo and Edgewood.

1998

The GMHC Board of Directors votes to affiliate through a management agreement with the Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa. Through the affiliation, GMH also participates as a rural affiliate of UnityPoint Health as a member of the UnityPoint Health Community Network.

The Family Resource Center is established.

2001

Guttenberg Municipal Hospital becomes a state-licensed Critical Access Hospital delivering acute, skilled, observation and hospice inpatient services.

2008

Awarded Silver Level Baldridge Quality Award from Iowa Quality Center.

2011

GMH opens its new, $16 million hospital building with larger private rooms, increased parking and a helicopter landing pad that provides faster access to emergency care for patients throughout the area.

2012

Family Medicine Associates, PC, with clinics in Guttenberg, Edgewood and Garnavillo, joins Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics and changes its name to Cornerstone Family Practice.

2013

GMHC implements EPIC electronic health record system for better, more coordinated care. Now healthcare providers have access to a patient’s medical record, whether the patient is being seen at a Cornerstone clinic, the GMH emergency room, or hospitalized at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

2014

Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics named a Top 100 Hospital by iVantage Analytics and a National Rural Hospital Association Top 20 Critical Access Hospital. GMHC receives Guardian of Excellence Award for Inpatient Satisfaction from Press Ganey.

2015

Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics named a Top 100 Hospital by iVantage Analytics. GMHC receives Guardian of Excellence Award for Inpatient Satisfaction from Press Ganey. Cornerstone Family Practice clinic achieves NCQA certification as a Medical Home.

2016

Cornerstone Family Practice Clinic moves to a newly remodeled location at 101 E. Watson St. in Garnavillo. Robotic-assisted surgery begins at GMHC. 

2017

The GMHC Board of Directors votes to affiliate through a management agreement with the MercyOne Dubuque. Through the affiliation, GMHC also participates as a rural affiliate of MercyOne and as a member of the MercyOne Network.

2018

3D Mammography begins at GMHC.

2019

A fully stocked Food Pantry officially opens in the Family Resource Center.

2022

Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics named Top 20 Critical Access Hospital – Best Practice in Patient Satisfaction by the National Rural Health Association.
