Sleep Services at GMHC

Not getting enough sleep or not getting the right kind of sleep can affect your health, job performance and relationships. It can even lead to accidents that cause injury or death, as well as play a role in developing numerous chronic diseases. Having a sleep disorder is a serious medical condition.

Fortunately, most sleep disorders can be treated effectively. GMHC Sleep Studies assist in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders, including:

Patient in sleep study
  • Sleep apnea
  • Insomnia
  • Excessive/extreme sleepiness
  • Narcolepsy
  • Sleepwalking/talking
  • Snoring
  • Restless sleep
  • Abnormal movements while asleep

GMHC contracts with Midwest Sleep Services of Waterloo to perform overnight sleep studies. A sleep study is non-invasive and lasts from six to eight hours. It can be performed in the hospital’s private, comfortable sleep lab or in your home. Sleep studies measure brain waves, chest movements, breathing and airflow patterns, heart rates, oxygen levels, snoring, and eye and muscle movement.

A licensed sleep lab technologist conducts the test and a certified sleep study physician reviews the data. Results are sent to your provider for diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

Cornerstone Family Practice providers can also refer patients for a free sleep screening if patients are at risk for sleep disorders.
